Certifications:
Seal Shield™ uses rigorous testing and certification of the procedures and technologies we use to create our products. As a result Seal Shield™ products carry many, if not all, of these certifications:
WEEE Compliance:The European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) applies to a wide range of electronic and electrical products. WEEE encourages the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment. WEEE makes producers and importers responsible for financing of the collection, treatment and recovery of WEEE. Reference: The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC, as amended by 2003/108/EC.
RoHS Compliance:The RoHS Directive will ban placement into the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than designated maximum allowable levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants, effective July 1, 2006.
RoHS works in conjunction with the EU WEEE Directive. RoHS supports WEEE by reducing the amount of hazardous chemicals used in production. In turn it reduces the risk of exposure to recycling staff as well as reduction in recycling costs. Manufacturers will need to ensure that their products, parts and components comply with RoHS in order to be distributed and sold in the EU. Reference RoHS2 (2011/65/EU). Substances Restricted by RoHS. From 1st July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market in the European Union shall not contain substances known to be harmful to humans and animal life:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent chromium (VI) (Cr (VI)
- Certain brominated flame retardants (BFR's)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB's)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE's)
The Maximum Concentration Values are 0.1% by weight (1000 ppm) in “homogeneous materials” for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenylethers, and 0.01% by weight (100ppm) for cadmium. These limits will apply to all components within the equipment, unless otherwise exempt.
CE Designation:The CE marking certifies that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements. CE stands for Conformité Européenne, "European conformity" in French.
NEMA 4X:Indoor or outdoor use; provides a degree of protection from falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, splashing water, hose directed water, and corrosion; will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure
IP68 and IP66:Most Seal Shield products are IP68. This means they are dustproof, waterproof and completely submersible. The STK503 keyboard family is IP66 which means the keyboards are dustproof and are dishwasher safe, but not completely submersible.
In the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) 60529 Standards document, it specifies an international classification system for the sealing effectiveness of enclosures of electrical equipment against the intrusion into the equipment of foreign bodies (i.e., tools, dust, fingers) and moisture. This classification system utilizes the letters "IP" ("Ingress Protection") followed by two digits. (An "X" is used for one of the digits if there is only one class of protection; i.e., IP X4 which addresses moisture resistance only.)
Degrees of Protection - The first digit indicates the degree that persons are protected against contact with moving parts (other than smooth rotating shafts, etc.) and the degree that equipment is protected against solid foreign bodies intruding into an enclosure.
- 0 - No special protection
- 1 - Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50mm in diameter
- 2 - Protection against fingers or other objects not greater than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter
- 3 - Protection from entry by tools, wires, etc., with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5mm
- 4 - Protection from entry by solid objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0mm
- 5 - Protection from the amount of dust that would interfere with the operation of the equipment
- 6 - Dust-tight
Degrees of Protection - Second Digit indicates the degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against the harmful entry of various forms of moisture (e.g. dripping, spraying, submersion, etc.).
- 0 - No special protection
- 1 - Protection from dripping water
- 2 - Protection from vertically dripping water
- 3 - Protection from sprayed water
- 4 - Protection from splashed water
- 5 - Protected against low-pressure jets from all directions - limited ingress permitted
- 6 - Protected against direct sprays from all directions - limited ingress permitted
- 7 - Protection against effects of immersion from 15cm to 1m
- 8 - Protection against complete, continuous submersion in water from 15 meters or 50 feet
